Lots of people all over the world use torrent to download files of all types and sizes. This can be very difficult at times and the download could take hours even with a fast internet connection.
If you’ve experienced this before, then this article is for you. I have put together all tips and tricks to help speed up your torrent and help download files faster even with a slow internet connection.
1. INSTALL AND USE A LIGHTWEIGHT TORRENT CLIENT
The first thing to do if you want to increase your torrent download speed is to use a lightweight torrent client. The most popular torrent client, BitTorrent comes with a lot of features and other bloated apps hence making it very heavy therefore not the best option if you want to increase your torrent download speed.
2. SELECT ONLY HEALTHY TORRENTS FOR DOWNLOAD
Choosing a healthy torrent will also help to increase your torrent download speed. The health of a torrent depends solely on the number of seeders and leechers. For the newbies, a seeder refers to the one who has the full copy of the file, movie, music or software you intend to download on the network.
The leecher, on the other hand, is the one who does not have the complete copy of the file or movie and has also joined the network to download.
A leecher becomes a seeder when he completely downloads the file. For a torrent to be healthy, the number of seeders should always be more than the number of leechers. So more seeders means a healthy torrent and such torrent can be downloaded very fast.
3. ADD A WINDOWS FIREWALL EXCEPTION
Windows firewall can mistake your torrent for a virus and block it. It is therefore advisable to add a Windows firewall exception to prevent your torrents from being blocked and also increase your download speed. Here is how to go about it.
First, open your torrent client (uTorrent) and click on Options and select Preferences from the drop-down menu. Navigate to Connections and check Add Windows Firewall Exception and click apply. It’s as easy as that.
Also, check Enable UPnP port mapping in case it’s unchecked.
4. OPTIMIZE TORRENT BY CHANGING GENERAL SETTINGS
Optimizing your torrent will help speed up your downloads drastically. Follow these steps to optimize your torrent client.
- Go to options and select Preferences.
- Select General and check Append .!ud to incomplete files, Pre-allocate all files and prevent standby if there are active torrents.
- GLOBAL UPLOAD AND DOWNLOAD RATE SHOULD BE LIMITED
5. GLOBAL UPLOAD AND DOWNLOAD RATES SHOULD BE LIMITED
Limiting your upload and download rate can increase your torrent speed if you’re using uTorrent. That said, turning your rate completely off won’t help you. The preferred upload rate should be between 70-80% whereas the download rate can be set to the maximum 0.
To set this up, navigate to Properties and select Bandwidth. Set the Global upload rate to 70 or 80% and the download rate to 0.
6. CHANGE THE NUMBER OF CONNECTIONS
To avoid overload after setting the upload and download rates, you have to change the number of connections as well. To do this, go to Properties and navigate to Bandwidth then set the global maximum number of connections to 150 and also set the maximum number of connected peer per torrent to 100. That’s all.
7. ADD MORE TRACKERS TO YOUR TORRENT
Adding new and faster trackers to your torrent can optimize and speed up your downloads by adding more seeds to your connection. Make sure you don’t remove existing trackers when adding new ones.
To add new trackers to your torrent, right click on the torrent you’re downloading and select Properties. Click on the General tab to reveal the trackers list. Copy and paste your trackers from the list. Download trackers HERE.
